Hyderabad: A four-member gang of property offenders was caught by the city police and 19 mobile phones, an autorickshaw and Rs 54,500 cash were recovered on Monday.
Acting on a tip off, the team caught Mohd Ibrahim Hussain (28) of Yakutpura, Mohd Shareef (26) of Aman Nagar, Syed Gayaz Hashmi (28) of Aliabad, and, Syed Rasheed Hussain alias Baba (39) of Gowlipura.
Hyderabad Commissioner Anjani Kumar said all suspects had previous crime history and were involved in several property offences in the city.
Explaining the modus operandi of the gang, he said Ibrahim Hussain, Shareef and Gayaz, used to move around in autorickshaw in the city and identify passenger on the lookout for sharing auto to reach his destination.
“They would accommodate the passenger in the vehicle. While Ibrahim drove the vehicle, Shareef and Hashmi, would sit beside the passenger on the commuter’s seat. Shareef would speak to the passenger while Hashmi would steal the mobile phone and cash from the passenger by diverting his attention,” said Anjani Kumar.
Following a spate of complaints of mobile phone and cash theft by an autorickshaw-borne gang of property offenders, the Commissioner’s Task Force (north) team identified the gang and caught them. “The gang members would sell the property to Syed Rasheed Hussain,” said the Commissioner.
The suspects were involved in 11 cases reported in Begumpet, Charminar and one each in Sultan Bazaar, Moghalpura, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Santoshnagar, and Begum Bazaar police station areas. The suspects were handed over to Begumpet police station for further action.
